We are currently seeking a Controls Engineer II to join our team.

The GNC Engineer II works on the development of Guidance, Navigation and Control algorithms for large flexible unmanned aircraft. Develop Hardware In the Loop (HIL) and Software In the Loop (SIL) flight dynamic simulation environments, including pilot training simulators. Conduct rigid body and flexible mode system identification and assist in flight test at remote locations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, code, test, troubleshoot, and analyze flight control and estimation systems for UAVs
  • Develop comprehensive, reusable simulation and analysis tools for model-based control and estimation designs including Monte Carlo and Pilot training simulations
  • Perform stability and performance analyses on linear and nonlinear models and flight data
  • Participate in and present at GN&C-related design requirements development and design reviews
  • Perform linearization of nonlinear models, and linear controls analysis and algorithm design for stability, robustness, and performance
  • Support flight test operations
  • Characterize, analyze, test, and troubleshoot control system hardware and software subsystems
  • Assist in software certification
  • Document designs with project reports, written descriptions, and engineering drawings
  • Help develop and maintain reusable software and GN&C design components and integrate into new designs
  • Analyze systems and flight test data to support model improvements and root cause investigation of failures and anomalies
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications & Background
  • US Citizenship or US permanent resident (Green Card Holder) due to ITAR
  • Bachelor s degree in a related field is required or equivalent combination of experience and education; Advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 2 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent progressive technical capacity in GNC and adjacent fields
  • UAV experience a must, fixed-wing a plus
  • Demonstrated hands-on autopilot experience a plus
  • Field (flight) test experience desired
  • Must be proficient in MATLAB and Simulink, App Designer a plus
  • Understanding of frequency domain and state-space representations of dynamic systems
  • Understanding of linear controls design and analysis tools and techniques
  • Understanding of robotic dynamics and control concepts
  • Understanding of basic aircraft and helicopter flight dynamics a plus
  • Familiarity with aided inertial navigation systems concepts and techniques
  • Understanding of classical and modern controls design and analysis approaches
  • Familiar with Monte Carlo, hardware-in-the-loop, and/or 6DOF simulation environments
  • Versed in linear and non-linear control methodologies, digital estimation and filtering techniques, and be comfortable working in simulation, hardware-in-the-loop and free-roam environments
  • Able to work on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors; Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
  • Able to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, where small teams share a broad variety of duties
  • Displays strong initiative and drive to accomplish goals and meet company objectives
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for current and past work products

  • Ability to travel overnight as needed in support of flight test operations (Occasional)

This position requires the use of information which is subject to compliance with International Traffic Arms Regulations (ITAR). To conform to U.S. Government export regulations/ITAR, applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S. (or, green card holder), protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
